Pikey Peak Trek Overview

The Pikey Peak Trek is a newly explored trekking route in Nepal’s Lower Khumbu region. It offers amazing views of Mount Everest and other peaks like Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Makalu. Watching the sunrise and sunset from Pikey Peak is an unforgettable experience. Sir Edmund Hillary once called it the best viewpoint in Nepal, and many trekkers do agree with it.

This trek is not just about the mountains. You will also get to see beautiful landscapes and learn about the Sherpa way of life. The warm hospitality of the locals makes the trip even more special. Since this trail is newly explored, it is quiet and less crowded, it’s perfect for those who want a peaceful trekking experience.

The Pikey Peak Trek is easier than other treks to Everest viewpoints. There are a few steep climbs, but it doesn’t require special skills, so even beginners can enjoy it. You will walk for about five to six hours a day. The trek lasts four to five days and goes up to 4,065 meters. Due to it being less popular, the tea houses along the way are simpler than those on famous routes like Everest Base Camp.

Our 9 days Pikey Peak Trek starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhap Bazaar, passing through forests, rice fields, and rivers. After staying overnight in Dhap, the trek begins. You will see the Numbur Himal range and visit the village of Japre, where you can view Everest and explore a small monastery.

The trail climbs to a small grassy hill at Bhulbhule and continues through forests filled with rhododendron trees, leading to Pikey Peak Base Camp. Early the next morning, you will hike to Pikey Peak for an incredible sunrise and stunning views of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Manaslu, and Dhaulagiri. After taking in the views, you will trek down to Lamjura Danda.

The journey then takes you through meadows and forests to the village of Taktor and finally to Junbesi, a Sherpa village with monasteries and stupas. The trek ends at Phaplu, where you can enjoy local Sherpa culture and food before driving back to Kathmandu.

Our team is more than happy to offer you a carefully planned itinerary for this amazing trek. Bookings for 2025 are now open, and we can customize the trek to match your schedule, budget, and preferences. Feel free to contact us for more details or to adjust the plan to your needs.

Why Should You Do the Pikey Peak Trek?

The Pikey Peak trek, a relatively new trail in Nepal's Everest region, is undoubtedly a hidden gem in the Himalayas. At an altitude of 4,065 meters, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of seven 8,000-meter peaks. There are five convincing reasons why you should consider this trek:

  • Perfect for Beginners: If you are new to trekking, Pikey Peak is an excellent choice. The trail is manageable, with moderate ascents and descents, making it a great introduction to mountain trekking. You will enjoy stunning scenery and cultural encounters without the physical challenges of more demanding routes.
  • No Flights Required: Skip the hassle of flying and enjoy a 7-8 hour scenic drive to Dhap Bazaar. On the way, you will pass through beautiful views of green hills, rice fields, and rivers, making the journey exciting from the very beginning.
  • Peak-Climbing Experience: Pikey Peak Trek gives you the excitement of reaching the top of a peak without needing any special training or climbing tools. It’s a safe and fun way to feel like a real mountain climber.
  • Close-Up Views of Everest: Enjoy amazing views of Mount Everest and other famous peaks like Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Makalu. From Pikey Peak, you will see a full panorama of the Himalayas, making it one of the best places to experience the beauty of the mountains.
  • Budget-Friendly Adventure: If you are looking for a budget-friendly trek, Pikey Peak is a great option. It’s cheaper than other treks like Everest Base Camp but still offers stunning views, fun experiences, and comfortable places to stay. Perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy the mountains without spending too much.

Is Pikey Peak Trek Right for You?

A common question for new trekkers is whether they can handle the altitude. The highest point on the Pikey Peak Trek is 4,065 meters, which isn’t very high compared to other treks in Nepal. This makes it easier and less risky for altitude sickness. As long as you are fit enough to walk 5-6 hours a day, this trek should be suitable for you.

The trails are not too steep or difficult as well, making it a great choice for beginners. Despite requiring some energy and determination, the Pikey Peak Trek is relatively easy compared to other treks in the Everest region. If you want to experience the beauty of the mountains without facing tough challenges, this trek is a great option. It offers amazing views and a chance to explore the Himalayas at a relaxed and manageable pace.

Best Time to trek Pikey Peak

The Pikey Peak trek is a fun and beautiful journey that can be done in almost any season, but preferably not in summer and monsoon for comfortable trekking. The best times to visit are during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

In spring (March to May), the trails are filled with colorful flowers like rhododendrons, Nepal's national flower. The sweet smell of the flowers makes your walk more enjoyable. Local Culture and Etiquette to Remember on Your Pikey Peak Trek

The local culture in the Himalayan region is rich in warmth and hospitality. The people here are kind-hearted, deeply religious, and strongly rooted in their cultural traditions. The area is home to many monasteries with great spiritual importance. As a trekker in this region, it is very important for you to understand and respect their cultural values and practices. Here are a few key points to keep in mind:

The way of Interaction with Villagers

The locals are famous for their friendly and kind nature, giving you a chance to experience their simple and happy way of life. As you walk through the villages, you can learn about their daily activities, farming methods, and special traditions. The most common greeting is"Namaste", where people place their palms together like in a prayer. This respectful greeting shows appreciation for the spirit in each person. When you meet locals on the trail or in the village, saying "Namaste" will be met with smiles and kindness.

Understanding Local Culture and Etiquette

In the Himalayan region, local culture and etiquette focus on respect, tradition, and community. When visiting villages, it is important to be polite and follow their traditions. For example, always take off your shoes before entering someone’s home or a temple to show respect. Public displays of affection are not common here, so it’s best to avoid them. When greeting elders, it is respectful to bow slightly or use formal titles. In religious places, be quiet, avoid pointing your feet at religious statues, and dress modestly. Following these simple rules will help you connect with the locals and have a more respectful and enjoyable experience.

Respectful Behavior When Visiting Monasteries

During your visit to the monastery, always remember to take off your shoes before entering to keep the place clean. Dress modestly by covering your shoulders and legs. Make sure to speak quietly and avoid making loud noises because monasteries are peaceful places for prayer. If you want to take photos, ask for permission first, as some areas don’t allow it. When walking around, always walk clockwise keeping the prayer wheels or stupas to your right, as this is the correct way. These simple actions show respect for the local culture and traditions.
