3) A Deep Dive into Sherpa Culture

This trek isn’t just about mountains, it’s also a chance to experience Sherpa culture. When is the best time to do the Short Everest View Trek?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times for the Everest View Trek. During these months, the sky is usually clear, and you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Everest and other nearby mountains. The weather is pleasant, making the trek more comfortable.

Spring (March to April) is a beautiful time to visit because many flowers, including rhododendrons, start blooming. The colorful flowers make the trails look even more stunning.

Autumn (October to December) is another great time for trekking. The forests are lush and green, and the air is fresh and clean after the monsoon rains. The mountain views are also very clear during this season.

Trekking during the monsoon season (June to September) is more challenging. The rain can make the trails muddy and slippery, and the cloudy sky might block the mountain views. Similarly, winter (late December to January) is the coldest time in the Everest region. There may be heavy snowfall, and some paths might be difficult to walk on. However, trekking is still possible if you are well-prepared for the cold.

You can do the Everest View Trek at any time of the year, but spring and autumn are the most popular seasons. During these months, many trekkers visit the region, so the trails can be busy. If you prefer fewer crowds, trekking in winter or monsoon can be a different kind of adventure.

      • Dal Bhat: This classic Nepali meal includes rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickles. It’s all-you-can-eat at most places, making it a favorite among trekkers.
      • Noodles and Pasta: From fried noodles to spaghetti, you will find various options to satisfy your carb cravings.
      • Soups: Hot soups like garlic soup, vegetable soup, or noodle soup are great for staying warm, especially in the evenings.

Essential Packing List for the Short Everest View Trek

Packing for the Short Everest View Trek can feel overwhelming, but don’t worry! You don’t need to bring everything, just the essentials to keep you warm, comfortable, and safe. Since this trek is relatively short and doesn’t go too high, you can keep your backpack light while still being well-prepared for the adventure.

Here’s a simple list of what you need:

      • Clothing: Moisture-wicking base layers, fleece or light down jacket, waterproof jacket, trekking pants, gloves, hat, and a buff/scarf.
      • Footwear: Sturdy trekking boots (broken in), wool socks, and camp shoes/sandals.
      • Backpack & Gear: A 25-30L daypack, sleeping bag (-5°C to -20°C), trekking poles, and a headlamp.
      • Toiletries & First Aid: Sunscreen, lip balm, toothbrush, biodegradable soap, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, basic medicines, and blister patches.
      • Water & Snacks: Reusable water bottles, purification tablets, and energy bars or nuts.
      • Electronics: Power bank, charging adapter, and a camera/phone.
      • Cash & Documents: Enough Nepali Rupees (no ATMs on the trek) and necessary permits.

Are there any hidden costs or additional expenses to consider?

When planning your trek, it is good to know that some extra costs may come up. Most trekking packages cover permits, guides, food, and places to stay, but here are some things you might need to pay for separately:

      • Drinking Water & Hot Drinks: Bottled water gets more expensive as you go higher. A bottle that costs NPR 50 in Kathmandu and might cost NPR 300 in the mountains. You can save money by using a water filter or purification tablets. Also, tea, coffee, and other drinks are usually not included in trek packages and can cost extra.
      • Phone Charging & WiFi: Lodges charge to charge your phone or camera (NPR 200-500 per charge). WiFi is available in some places but can cost around NPR 500 per hour. Carrying a power bank is a good idea.
      • Hot Showers: Most lodges charge for hot showers, usually NPR 300-500 per shower. Some trekkers skip showers or use wet wipes instead.
      • Tips for Guides & Porters: Tipping is a nice way to thank your guide and porter.
      • Snacks & Extra Food: If you want chocolates, snacks, or soft drinks, they will be much more expensive as you go higher. Bringing some from Kathmandu can save money.
      • Emergency Costs: Make sure your travel insurance covers high-altitude trekking. If you get sick and need a helicopter rescue, it can cost up to USD 5,000.
      • Extra Hotel Nights: Flights to and from Lukla can be delayed due to bad weather. If that happens, you may need to stay extra nights in Kathmandu or along the trail, which means extra costs for food and accommodation.

Knowing these extra costs ahead of time will help you plan your budget and avoid surprises on your trek!

Is it possible to do the Short Everest View Trek on a budget?

Yes! You can do the Short Everest View Trek without spending too much if you plan wisely. While trekking in the Everest region isn’t very cheap, here are some simple ways to save money:

      • Stay in Budget Lodges: Teahouses along the route have simple and affordable rooms. If you eat all your meals at the same teahouse, they may offer you a discount or even a free stay.
      • Eat Local Food: Western dishes like pizza and pasta cost more in the mountains. Eating Nepali food like dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables) is cheaper, gives more energy, and often comes with free refills.
      • Bring a Water Purifier: Buying bottled water gets expensive as you go higher. Carry a reusable bottle and use purification tablets or a water filter to save money.
      • Avoid Extra Charges: Charging your phone, using WiFi, and taking hot showers cost extra. Bring a power bank, use WiFi only when needed, and use wet wipes instead of taking hot showers often.
      • Travel in a Group: Trekking with friends or joining a group helps you share costs for guides, porters, and other expenses.
      • Get Your Own Permits: You need two permits, Sagarmatha National Park Permit and Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit. If you get them yourself in Kathmandu or Monjo, you can avoid extra fees from trekking agencies.
      • Book Cheaper Flights: Flights from Kathmandu to Lukla can be expensive. Booking early or flying from Manthali instead of Kathmandu can help you save money.
      • Bring Snacks from Kathmandu: Snacks, chocolates, and energy bars cost a lot more in the mountains. Buying them in Kathmandu before you start the trek will save you money.

While you can’t avoid all costs, planning ahead and making small changes can help you enjoy the Everest trek without spending too much!

Why is the Short Everest View Trek a great option for trekkers?

Not everyone has the time to do a long trek, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience the beauty of the Everest region. The Short Everest View Trek is perfect for people who want to enjoy the Himalayas without taking weeks off. Here’s why it’s a great option if you’re short on time:

      • Quick and Amazing: In just a few days, you can see Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and other incredible peaks. It is a short trek, but the views will stay with you forever.
      • Easier and Less Effort: The Everest Base Camp trek takes about two weeks and requires a lot of endurance. The Short Everest View Trek is shorter and easier, but still offers stunning views of the mountains.
      • Experience Sherpa Culture: Even though it’s a short trek, you will walk through Sherpa villages, visit monasteries, and see prayer flags. It’s a great way to experience the unique culture of the area.
      • Comfortable Altitude: This trek doesn’t go as high as the Everest Base Camp trek, so there’s less chance of altitude sickness. It’s a safer and more comfortable option for trekkers.
      • Perfect for Beginners: If you are new to trekking, this trek is a great way to experience the Himalayas. The trail is easy to follow and the difficulty is manageable.
      • Fits Into Your Schedule: The trek takes about 7 to 10 days, which is perfect if you have a busy schedule. You can even add side trips to nearby villages for more views if you want to.

The Short Everest View Trek shows that you don’t need weeks to see the wonders of Everest. It’s a quick, beautiful, and fulfilling adventure for anyone who wants to make the most of their limited time!
